“Every time you are paying for your groceries, you realise how inflation is eating at your pocket. That is why Care Protect Invest South Africa (SA) today wants to thank you for your selfless donations in an effort to relieve poverty and genuinely make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate,” says Dinah Bronkhorst, executive head of Care Protect Invest SA.
Here are some examples of how a R20 contribution — towards any of Care Protect Invest SA’s sustainable projects — can add a smile to a child’s face:
- It provides a breakfast: sandwich, fruit and a cold drink;
- It buys stationery: one pen, a pencil, a notebook and an eraser;
- Offers a balanced lunch with two vegetables, chicken and starch; or
- It transports two children to school and back.
This non-profit charity, often in collaboration with other organisations, strives to establish sustainable feeding schemes and training programs, alleviate poverty by empowering individuals, make scholarships and loans available by means of a treasury fund and provide long-term solutions to children who needs a loving home with their sustainable foster care model.
“Our focused projects offer underprivileged persons the opportunity to develop into individuals who thrive with pride, hope, independence, self-preservation, self-worth and ambition. Children cannot take care of themselves or determine what their financial or social position will be. That is why Care Protect Invest SA focuses on offering underprivileged children a better future by providing in their basic needs, makes schooling more accessible and runs programmes where they can qualify themselves so that they in turn can take care of their own families,” Bronkhorst explains.
One of their successful projects is based in the heart of the Western Cape’s wine valley, Rawsonville. Under the loving care of Gladys van Wyk, they provide over 250 balanced meals to children daily, distribute donated clothing, shoes and toiletries and teaches children about basic hygiene. Care Protect Invest SA also funds an aftercare centre where children are being looked after and assisted with homework.
“And if you thought the criteria for an underprivileged person is only determined by his or her financial position, you need to rephrase! Although money is the main reason why people do not have access to proper healthcare, housing, nutrition, protection, education, information, water or sanitation, they are classified as underprivileged when they lack three or more of these dimensions,” she explains.
According to Statistics SA’s latest child poverty report over 60% of SA’s children (0 to 17 years) are multi-dimensionally poor.
“If you take into account that almost one third of our population, more than 20 million, consists of this age group, the socio-economic crisis we are facing is real! Non-profit organisations, churches and benefactors wholeheartedly are joining hands in an effort to alleviate the struggle,” says Bronkhorst.
As food day is celebrated worldwide on 16 October, Care Protect Invest SA encourages the public to support a needy family with groceries, a hungry person with a plate of food or contribute to a sustainable feeding scheme in their area.
“It is also easy to make a R20 donation to Care Protect Invest SA by sending an SMS with the word ‘FEED’ to 40112. Individuals or businesses are also welcome to donate non-perishable groceries and toiletries. It can be delivered to our office in Pretoria or you can send with Paxi to Elarduspark’s PEP store,” she says.
